This is the story of Donald H. Parkes' experiences from 1944 to 1946 as told by his letters, newspaper articles, pictures and the document he wrote about his experiences several years later.

Don was the second son and youngest of four children of Elmer and Lucy Parkes. His parents moved their young family from Onaway, Michigan to Gaylord when he was 5 years old.  He grew up in Gaylord along with his older brother, Elmer Jr., and his sisters Irene and Elaine.  He enlisted on March 23, 1944 at the age of 18.

This story was assembled by his daughter Carla L. Parkes.   The letters and the documents he wrote have been re-typed for easier reading.   Any misspelled words or unique grammar are as Don wrote them.
