In 1992, a group of forward thinking local citizens began discussing the possibility of establishing a "community savings account" which was permitted, even encouraged, under Michigan law. In November 1994, they incorporated the Otsego County Community Foundation. They knew they would need help with the management and operations of their new organization. This group of visionary individuals diligently researched their options. They chose to become an affiliate of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation in March 1995.
During the next seven years the Otsego County Community Foundation matured, grew its assets and worked toward completing the requirements to become an independent community foundation.
On April 4, 2002, the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation Board of Directors recognized that the Otsego County Community Foundation had fulfilled all requirements to become an independent, self-governing community foundation and unanimously voted to initiate process of separation. On July 1, 2002 the Funds were placed into a separate account for independent investment by the Otsego County Community Foundation. On July 15, 2002 the Otsego County Community Foundation was certified by the State of Michigan Department of Treasury.
