Educational Requirement

Master Gardener classes meet for ten sessions.      Master Gardener students are expected to attend  all sessions.  The classes are taught by  Extension agents, specialists from MSU,  and local gardening experts.  The students work from a 700 page Master Gardener notebook.  The intent of the course is to provide a basic overview of major horticultural subjects while introducing the students  to a variety of resources for future reference.  The training teaches the Master Gardener to consider all sides of a gardening problem before making a decision.

Students are given take-home quizzes throughout the course and must receive a score of 70% on the final exam to qualify as a Master Gardener.  The final exam is a take home test that emphasizes the student's ability to gather the appropriate information from resource material cited throughout the course.
